EEL Partners with UNIDO and Japanese Government to Launch Cutting-Edge Plastic Recycling Technology in Nigeria

Abuja, March 20, 2025
Environmental Expressions, a leader in sustainable waste management solutions, has proudly commissioned advanced plastic recycling technology as part of a landmark partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Government of Japan. This initiative, under UNIDO’s “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices” project, marks a transformative step in addressing Nigeria’s plastic waste crisis while advancing circular economy principles.

The newly installed recycling systems at Environmental Expressions’ Abuja facility include a Laser Filter System and Sand Remover System—innovative technologies designed to revolutionize the recycling of water sachets and polyethylene (PE) film, materials historically challenging to recycle due to economic and technical barriers. These upgrades will streamline operations by eliminating production downtime, enhancing raw material purity, and reducing water and energy consumption, thereby making large-scale plastic recycling both economically viable and environmentally impactful.
A Milestone for Sustainability and Innovation
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Habib Ahmed, CEO of Environmental Expressions, highlighted the company’s decade-long commitment to tackling plastic pollution: “Plastic sachets provide essential access to clean drinking water for millions, but improper disposal threatens our ecosystems. With this advanced technology, we’re turning a persistent environmental challenge into an opportunity for sustainable growth. Our mission is to ensure plastic waste is responsibly managed and reintegrated into productive use.”
The project aligns with Nigeria’s broader goals to reduce plastic leakage into the environment and promote industrial sustainability. By diverting plastic waste from landfills and waterways, Environmental Expressions aims to recycle thousands of tons of polyethylene annually, significantly mitigating environmental harm while creating value from waste.
Collaborative Leadership for a Circular Future
The initiative has garnered strong support from global and national stakeholders. Hitoshi Kosaki, Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, emphasized the partnership’s significance: “Japan is proud to support this innovative leap in Nigeria’s circular economy. These systems exemplify how technology can transform waste management, ensuring plastics are recycled efficiently and sustainably.”
Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, echoed this sentiment, urging broader adoption of circular practices: “This project sets a precedent for public-private collaboration. We call on industries, policymakers, and citizens to embrace responsible consumption and waste management to safeguard our planet.”
Osuji Otu, UNIDO National Programme Officer, underscored the project’s scalability: “By integrating cutting-edge solutions like these, we’re not only addressing plastic pollution but also empowering local industries to lead Africa’s green transition.”
Expanding Impact Through Innovation
The recycling upgrade complements earlier project milestones, including the deployment of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) across Abuja. These machines incentivize plastic waste collection, encouraging community participation in recycling efforts.
Driving Nigeria’s Green Industrial Revolution
Environmental Expressions’ partnership with UNIDO and Japan reflects a shared vision for a cleaner, greener Nigeria. By transforming plastic waste into valuable resources, the company is paving the way for sustainable industrial growth, job creation, and environmental preservation.
“This is more than technology—it’s a movement,” added Ahmed. “Together with our partners, we’re proving that economic progress and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.”
