Our Impact
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities
Challenge
The escalating problem of plastic waste accumulation in communities has become a significant concern,
directly impacting urban cleanliness, public health, and environmental sustainability. The presence of un-managed plastic waste not only clutters public spaces but also poses serious hazards to the
environment, threatening local wildlife, contaminating water sources, and exacerbating respiratory and other health issues caused by pollution.
This issue is further aggravated by poor waste disposal systems and low levels of recycling awareness among residents. Without intervention and structured waste management programs, the problem continues to grow, creating long-term environmental and public health risks.
Key Intervention
- Partnered with waste pickers to establish community-based waste collection programs.
- Engaged with local communities to promote awareness about recycling and its benefits.

Outcome
- Cleaner urban areas with reduced plastic waste accumulation.
- Increased community engagement in sustainable waste management practices.
- Strengthened waste collection efficiency through structured partnerships.
Lessons learned
- Community involvement is key to successful waste management programs.
- Training waste pickers improves collection efficiency and fosters local partnerships.
