SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth
Challenge
Establishing sustainable and stable employment opportunities within an industry that is predominantly characterized by informal labor practices presents a major challenge.
These informal structures can undermine job security, benefits, and worker rights. This requires innovative approaches to formalize these positions, ensure fair wages, and promote a reliable workforce that contributes positively to the economy.
Key Intervention – Job Creation and Workforce Development
- Formalized 73 direct jobs, providing workers with contracts, benefits, and long-term employment stability.
- Prioritized gender inclusivity, hiring 39 men and 34 women to ensure balanced representation.
- Partnered with local waste pickers, integrating them into the formal economy.
- Implemented skills training to improve workforce productivity and professional growth.

Outcome – Economic and Social Impact
- Employees and waste pickers experienced a boost in income levels, improving financial security.
- Women’s empowerment in the workforce increased, fostering greater diversity and leadership opportunities.
- The initiative improved waste picker welfare, providing structured work opportunities.
- Employee retention rates improved, reducing turnover and increasing job stability.
Lessons learned
- Formal employment structures significantly enhance workforce productivity and job satisfaction.
- Training programs lead to better operational efficiency and quality control.
